Moving to or living in the UK? Looking to apply for work? You will need to prepare your British English CV. A CV is also known as a resume. Did you know that in the UK, we have our own way of making CVs that is different from what is commonly done in other European countries? A British CV is closer in format and structure to an American CV. In this lesson, you will learn what to include and what not to include in your curriculum vitae. Also, I will teach you some impressive vocabulary and phrases for your CV that will help you land that interview and achieve your goals. It's not easy to find employment, but with the right skills, you have a better chance of getting the job you want! Take a quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/job-skills-uk-cv/ TRANSCRIPT Hello, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is your British English CV. Maybe you want to put together your first British English CV to apply for jobs in the UK. So in this video, I'm going to tell you what's standard, and I'll tell you a little bit about it, so that you can create your first or an improved British English CV. So what we're going to talk about first is the format of your CV. Because we... There's not like one CV that's... Everybody does. There are conventions, there are set ways of doing it, but within that, there is some leeway; you can do different things. And this is important when we think about format, because it really depends what experience you have, which format you're going to choose, because you want to use your CV to sell yourself. So if you've got a lot of experience behind you, then you want to do a chronological CV, with your most recent job and then going backwards. We usually have the most detail... Or no, we do. We have the most detail for the most recent or current job, and then after that, the previous job, some detail as well. But generally after that, we don't really say much about the jobs that far in the past. And that's the key difference that I've seen on many CVs when I'm looking at CVs from people from Italy or Spain or wherever. They usually have a lot of detail for past jobs that were quite a long time ago, whereas we don't really say so much about things that were in the past, especially if they were more than two years ago. Yeah. What if you don't really have much experience, well what do you do then? Well, you put your education in the first position. So, you would want to put your education first. In the experience CV, the education isn't the most important thing; that can go at the end or on the second page. And what if you're a freelance worker or a temporary worker? So, you've got lots of little jobs, what do you do then? Well, you choose a format where you're grouping your experience in most important projects that you did. It's not really about the time that you worked on something; it's about the skills that you acquired. So in this kind of CV, you really need to express all your skills, not how long it was, how long you were there, and this kind of thing like in a normal job. What not to include, then, on your British English CV? I think there's a difference between what's the law about what not to include and what's the actual practice. Because by law, we're not meant to put our date of births or photographs on CVs. But, it's, it does happen for certain kinds of jobs. Let's take this example: you move to London, and you're trying to get a job in London, and you want to do a waitressing job or a bar job, or something like that. If you go into independent places, independent places and maybe not like... Maybe they don't really know about the law, and actually they do want to know how old you are. So, in... I'm not telling you to do it, I'm just saying that it happens that some people choose to put this information on their CVs. I, this is a just a personal thing of mine: on a CV, I just find it completely pointless that somebody puts headings like "email" and then puts an email address after it with a name in it, because it's obviously your email. It's like a word that we don't need. We don't need to see that on the CV. Same with "mobile". We know what a mobile number looks like. So pointless headings I don't like, and also, I don't like the title at the top, when somebody writes "CV" or "Curriculum Vitae" which is a Latin word, because we obviously know it's a CV. So, I'm against pointless extra words on CVs.

Watch Next: Interview Success MasterClass: https://youtu.be/9mXG3AiXVMY In this video, I answer a common question "How To Justify A Gap In Resume or Gap In Employment". In this video, I will talk about whether this is something important that you should be worried about. And how to justify the gap in your employment. So, is the gap in your employment really important? The short answer is Yes. In fact, it’s probably more important than you think. It’s, in fact, a major problem. It’s one of those things that just kill so many opportunities before you even know about it. Let me explain why I had to say that. See, in an ideal world Hiring Managers, like myself, wouldn’t really care much about it. For me it’s all about skills, relevant experience, and character traits. Fairly simple. Even if you have a 2 year gap in your resume, as long as you have enough relevant experience and skills that are still fresh, there is no reason why I would care at all. And this is not just my opinion I know most of my colleagues here at PwC Consulting share the same view with me. But this is what is important; we are hiring managers, we are actual practicing management consultants hiring for the role. We are not HR. Now, that’s where the problem is. HR, unfortunately, eliminates a lot of resumes if there is a major gap in the employment record. The reasons are two-fold 1) They want to impress the hiring managers with the profiles they present. Right? So, they don’t want to take a chance on someone who is unemployed and potentially lost all the skills 2) Because you have been unemployed for a long time, they think that you must have attended all these interviews and failed them. So, if you are unemployed for a year, then they think ok you must have had at least 20 interviews and you failed them all. Otherwise, why would you be unemployed? Even if you justify it in your resume somehow, they still most of the time don’t need to take that chance. They actually don’t have to take that chance because your resume is probably 1 in 1,000 resumes received for that role. So, what happen? This is what happens, your resume gets reviewed by the HR and immediately trashed. They won’t have the need to even get in touch with you to ask “hey why is there such a gap”. Immediately, trashed. Then they make an analogy, and consider you as almost unemployable. So, what to do then...

It takes just seconds for employers to judge a person based on first impression, but when it comes to a CV, those precious seconds could be the difference between a potential employer reading on, or simply moving on to the next application. Make an impact by increasing your likeability and employability using the following 4 simple steps to writing a powerful personal statement. Step 1Size MattersA personal statement should be no longer than 40-60 words (or 4-5 lines long). This is a short, powerful statement about what makes YOU the best candidate. Don’t waffle! Step 2 – Avoid Bragging If written in first person, a personal statement can sound like a personal brag. Instead, try to write in third person to make it sound more like an advertisement for you. X Wrong I am an intelligent, skilled, ambitious and professional. I have a proven track record and am very customer focussed, good with people, deadlines and handling budgets. With an excellent eye for details, I am bright, creative and work well under pressure. ✓ Right Intelligent, skilled and ambitious professional with a proven track record in handling deadlines and budgets. As a bright and creative individual, with an excellent eye for detail, has shown excellent customer focus and the ability to work well with others even under pressure. Step 3 – Use Impact Words? When describing accomplishments and experience, try to use impact words to give your statement more oomph! Use words like: accomplished, achieved, coached, completed, created, demonstrated, developed, enhanced, executed, expanded, focused, generated, identified, implemented, improved, increased, inspired, mentored; motivated, negotiated, organised, participated, performed, planned, presented, produced, proposed, raised, succeeded, transformed, won! To highlight your key skills that recruiters and employers are searching for, try: client focussed, committed, communication, creative, decisive, effective listener, endurance, enthusiasm, entrepreneurship, independence, influence, initiative, innovation, leadership, motivation, negotiation, people management, project management, problem solving, public speaking, team working. Step 4 – Be different! On average, there are 39.2 applications for every job vacancy. YOU NEED TO STAND OUT. Use your personal statement to do just that…make a ‘Personal Statement’! Don’t sit back thinking that you can’t get a job because you don’t have the level of experience you think is required for interview. Your personal statement could be your ticket into a job interview that you otherwise would never have been accepted for. Here’s how: Determined, motivated and dedicated. Demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team even in extreme conditions and under pressure when climbing Mount Everest. Has Performed with the same level of dedication, drive and focus in the workplace. Rise above the mountain of job applications. Believe it or not, applicants have been invited for interview purely based on something unique and interesting that they wrote on their CV. Help the employer want to learn more about you at interview by including something unique to you that will pique their interest. Whether you have raised large amounts of money for charity, competed in marathons in several different countries, or you’ve performed alongside Hugh Jackman in a theatre production…it all counts! Conclusion: Make sure that you outline who you are and the qualities you offer. Reference your skills and tailor them towards the vacancy on offer. Don’t just show what makes you good, but show what makes you unique. Note: Don’t go overboard in self-praise, or worse, make something up to stand out that you may be asked about at interview. How to write a cover letter for resume?Which help you to catch employers attentions. Get Ideas by Clicking here http://www.freshersworld.com/resume/guidelines?src=Youtube and find out the sample format of Cover letters for resume building. Technically defining, a cover letter is only a single-page letter that should be part of any job application. It is the document sent with your resume to provide an additional information of your skills and experience. While writing the Cover Letter , use simple language and uncomplicated sentence structure. Ruthlessly eliminate all unnecessary words. While writing a cover letter, address it to a named individual. Keep in mind that it should be very precise, most probably for freshers, it should have 3 – 4 paragraphs maximum, where 1st Para –should reveal about you, your current position and your intention towards the job. At the same time don’t be boring Use the first paragraph to grab the employer's attention; give the employer the reasons that you are qualified for the position 2nd para – this para is most important as it will showcase what you have in you for the company. distinguish your cover letter from those of other job-seekers by quantifying and giving examples that amplify and prove the claims you make in your letter. You should reveal your skill, abilities, expertise, experience etc in any field in the past or present. Also keep in mind to highlight those expertises more which are required by the company whom you are sending the cover letter to. Don’t include your hobbies or interest by any chance. 3rd para – should be a concluding one, where you describe how you will be beneficial for the company if they hire you. Try to conclude by answering the question that the employer will be seeking while reading your letter, that Why he should hire you? Personally sign the letter, preferably in blue ink. Before I leave, Last tip for Cover letter: Don't use such clichés as "Enclosed please find my resume" or "As you can see on my resume enclosed herewith." Employers can see that your resume is enclosed; they don't need you to tell them. Such trite phrases just waste precious space. And don't use pleonasms (wordy phrases), which also waste space. Best of luck writing cover letter. Keep writing, Re-writing, Correcting and Keep updating.
